Turning on a tap and seeing water pour out or flicking a switch to turn on a light are just commonplace acts of everyday life where we live, yet on the other hand they are complete mysteries for many children living in other parts of the world.

For these children, going to school every day is also out of the ordinary, and only a handful are lucky enough to be able to study, as most of them work in the fields, look after their younger siblings or are members of one or other armed group in some country in conflict.

The educational material “Eight out of Ten” seeks to reflect and focus upon these and other circumstances of extreme necessity and serious danger in which the younger generations in many countries throughout the world live today.

The educational project “Eight out of Ten” is designed mainly for pupils of secondary education and consists of the following materials:

The educational project “Eight out of Ten” is designed mainly for pupils of secondary education and consists of the following materials:

  • A DVD containing 21 videos of around 5 minutes in length that show what life is really like for most young people in Latin America, Africa and Asia; in other words, a normal day for them, what time they get up, where they study, the household chores they have to do, etc.
  • A CD-Rom containing 21 teaching units, one for each video, which are used to prompt the pupils to work on different topics related to development, such as: migration, poverty, and indigenous peoples, amongst others, using very simple and attractive activities.
  • A CD-Rom containing interactive software with 7 activities taken from the actual teaching units, which also allow working on these topics linked to development, but doing so by means of new technologies.
  • A set of 7 panels, presented as an interactive display, which provide information on different situations and topics, and cater for a teaching activity to be organised around each one of them.

The educational project “Eight out of Ten” has been developed for use across the board in the various subjects that make up compulsory secondary education in Spain (Enseñanza Secundaria Obligatoria), as well as in other areas of extramural education, such as cultural centres, leisure centres and youth hostels, amongst others.

All the material is available in three languages (Spanish, Basque and English), except for the panels, which are in Spanish and Basque only

The material is completely free and a copy is available on request, as are the panels, although in this latter case only for an agreed time.

Location of the project

Since the introduction of the educational project “Eight out of Ten” in 1996, over these past 15 years the material has been used mainly in the Basque Autonomous Community (CAPV) and Navarre, although it has also travelled further afield, to places such as Seville, León,  and Murcia, in Spain, and even to Sweden, Australia, and the USA.

Within the Basque Country, work has been carried out in the province of Bizkaia, largely in towns on both sides of the Nervión estuary (Getxo, Portugalete, Ortuella, Erandio, Leioa, Loiu, Barakaldo, and Abanto-Zierbana, amongst others), and also in the province of Gipuzkoa, above all in the district of Donostialdea-Bajo Bidasoa, which consists of the following 13 towns and cities: Andoain, Astigarraga, Donostia (San Sebastian), Errentería, Hernani, Hondarribia, Irún, Lasarte-Oria, Lezo, Oiartzun, Pasajes, Urnieta and Usurbil.
